A woman sailor need not leave her boat behind when her husband passes away, while sailing around the world…she CAN continue on!

Leaving Cape Town after my husband died from Covid, across the biggest ocean yet, without the captain I sailed the last 75,000 miles with was daunting. The very thought of it causes immense anxiety in my life to this very day… but with some careful planning and assessment of the risks, I was able to prepare for a passage with another man…and to successfully cross the southern Atlantic Ocean, 6100 miles this past year. This is the story of what I did to prepare for such a task.

Well, I am finally back to writing articles after nearly 2 years of not…this time for Ocean Navigator magazine. Michael Hayward did much of the photography for it. You can view the article below on page 24

One major mess up that Ocean Navigator did was to NOT give the photo credits to Michael Hayward… all but a few were from him..the best ones…

Who wouldn’t love sailing?

Michael Hayward shows what a sailing man does when he loves a sailing woman named Rebecca Childress. Through hurricane preparation, a haulout, Coppercoat and Propspeed touchups, to extreme heat, and constant heartache, Michael never leaves…he never stops caring for his old girls.
Rebecca struggles to become a female sailor alone on her beautiful bluewater sailboat in Prickly Bay, Grenada, for hurricane season. Soon Rebecca will complete her circumnavigation aboard SV Brick House, but until then, she struggles through her relationship with Michael, a like minded, and kind sailing man…who does everything to show Rebecca just how much he loves and cares for her. But will Rebecca ever understand this? Or will she need to become a female singlehander? Not if Michael gets his way!

A little update..While it’s not the last you will see of Michael, it’s official, public and final. We have broken up so many times this summer…and gotten back together because of all the love in our hearts for eachother…

But alas, we know it’s for the best for both of us, to make it final… so we did finally, a few weeks ago.

It was a great sail across the South Atlantic, from Cape Town, to Namibia, then to St Helena and Ascension…and then direct to Grenada…

This video details why we ended it, and how much love and appreciation we have for eachother. We remain friends, and are grateful for what we have learned from eachother…a very important, fragile time in my life… We both March onwards…
